5th Wheel with a Ford RangerIn 2017 We bought a motorhome, which we enjoyed while I was still working full time. This was great for short term breaks and wild camping but we did find that once we'd got to our site, we were a bit stuck for transport. We could always pack up and take the motorhome into a town, maybe a park and ride (if it didn't have a 2m barrier), but there was always an anxiety about driving a 7.5m vehicle around and being able to find parking spaces.

In 2024, as I further reduced my working time to only a few days a year, we decided to move to the 'caravan life'. The benefits with a caravan is that once you've towed it to your site, you then have your vehicle to travel around and parking in towns is therefore a lot easier. Also, as I could effectively work from anywhere, we could spend a lot longer away without the same constraints of having to be a particular work location.

But which caravan? The motorhome was fine for a few days at a time but we found it a bit uncomfortable for longer periods. The number of glasses of red wine I spilled on the driver's seat and waiting an hour for half-cooked chips from the tiny gas oven were just a couple of bug bears. We new we wanted a bigger vehicle and came across a firm called CCRV (www.ccrv.co.uk) who were importing and selling American 5th Wheels. These are effectively huge caravans (4.5 tonnes) that you need a fairly powerful truck to hitch up to and tow. Many have slides that expand the space you have once you've reached your site.

We went to see them in Oct 2024 and instantly fell in love with them and order one straight away. We picked up our Grand Design Reflection 28RL in May 2025 and embarked on an epic 5 month travel around the UK!
